Whiteinch Nursery murals
What I did: mural design, mural painting, graphic design, sign writing, project management
What the client needed
The head teacher of Whiteinch Nursery in Glasgow, Geraldine Dolan, approached me looking for painted artwork which would be fun, educational and colourful. The design needed to include numbers 1-20, the alphabet and a mud kitchen artwork with fun cooking words. As the artwork was for small children, it needed to be designed for their eye-level height. Due to a limited budget, it was key to design a mural artwork which would get the best out of my time.
The walls to be painted are in the nursery’s garden which is often used by the children as a fun place for them to play games. The artwork should be a fun part of the outside experience.
My part of the project
The brief – adding the alphabet and numbers to my design – was really fun. Rather than painting the entire walls, we were looking at designing sections to get the best out of the budget:
- Number Snake
As one of the walls included a climbing wall, I thought it would be fun to design a number snake, which meant the kids could climb along the numbers; - Tulip Alphabet
For the alphabet, I designed a bed of flowers to grow behind the sandbox. It was nice to watch the nursery teachers use the rainbow colours of the tulips to help the children navigate the letters; - Mud Kitchen
The design of the mud kitchen is based on healthy foods for children. These are great starting points for conversations with children about non-processed food; - Nursery Logo (Designed by a pupil)
Finally, I also painted the nursery’s logo on the wall. - Fuel station
After designing the artwork, I sourced all of the materials for the project. I was delighted to see how much the children enjoyed their colourful garden.
