Art House film poster, DCA

What I did: Poster design, poster illustration, one year contract

What the client needed

Dundee Contemporary Art (DCA) approached me looking for an artist to illustrate exclusive prints highlighting some of the most exciting new titles screened at DCA throughout 2023. The film posters should be delivered on a monthly bases from January to December 2023, starting with Tár directed by Todd Field. The aim of these artworks will be to take viewers on a journey through a range of titles that will represent everything that’s special about DCA Cinema – an independent spirit and a passion for brilliant stories, beautifully told.

The DCA will make these illustrations available as high-quality prints for DCA Members to collect when they come to see the chosen films each month.

Ida was the perfect artist for this project – we wanted to convey the tone and themes of the selected films, and every illustration hit the mark perfectly, even in cases where the film was closely embargoed and information and preview images were limited. Not only did Ida meet every deadline throughout the year, but she often sent the final artwork in many days ahead of time.

Ida considered every brief carefully and it was great to get a range of mock-up sketches for us to consider before the final artworks were developed each month. Her knowledge and understanding of commercial printing meant that the illustrations looked fantastic at our Box Office, and we were able to offer our DCA Members a really special item to take home.”

Tár, directed by Todd Field

It’s a dark film, a powerful film and from my impression, all about control. The image dances and flickers within the movement of the even metronome revealing glimpses of the conductor’s hands and Cate Blanchett starring as Lydia Tár.

EO, directed by Jerzy Skolimowski

EO is a stunning film journaling the life of a donkey directed by Jerzy Skolimowski. My inspiration for this poster fell from a book a bought in a charity shop a while back. It contained this image of a mule which stood facing away with its ears turned towards the camera. I really like how the animal appeared both engaged and listening with its ears, while also facing away.

“I’m excited to bring EO to DCA Cinema for Dundee film fans; this poignant exploration of life, its joys and hardships through the eyes of a donkey is already one of my favourites of 2023,” says DCA’s Head of Cinema, David Nixon.
